Job Description: A research associate position is
available in Dr Nick Goldman's research group (see http://www.ebi.ac.uk/goldman)
at the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The group undertakes
research into the evolutionary analysis of DNA and protein sequences.
The core research in the group is into computational data analysis methods,
and in particular the probabilistic modelling of molecular evolutionary
processes and statistical inference based on these models. We also have
interests in applications of existing and novel sequence analyses, and
benefit from close association with other research and database groups
at the EBI (see, http://www.ebi.ac.uk/Groups
and http://www.ebi.ac.uk/Databases)
The research associate would work with Nick Goldman and other members
of the group on issues relating to evolutionary sequence analysis. It
is expected that these would include phylogenetic methodology, and may
also include specific biological applications. The position permits
great freedom for the successful applicant to become involved in research
projects already underway in the group (for example, detection of adaptive
evolution, analysis of patterns of DNA mutations in both genomic and
protein-coding sequences, analysis of patterns of amino acid
replacements over evolutionary timescales, relationship of protein structure
and evolution, comparative analysis of genome-scale sequences) and to
develop her/his own interests and research proposal; the
successful candidate will be encouraged to do both of these things.
Qualifications and Experience: It is expected that
the successful applicant will have a Ph.D., and ideally some further
research experience, in a related field. Exceptional post-graduate candidates
with research experience may also be considered. Necessary qualifications
include understanding of and enthusiasm for the questions molecular
biologists need to ask of sequence data, experience of
mathematical modelling and statistical data analysis, and scientific
computer programming. Candidates with backgrounds in biology, mathematics/
statistics or scientific computer programming will be
considered.
Contract: An initial contract of 3 years will be offered
to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances
at the time of review.
Closing Date: 24.04.2003
Commencing Date: as soon as possible after closing
