Current graduate students in the biological, mathematical, and computational sciences interested in computational phylogenetics and its applications to biology are invited to apply for an IGERT program traineeship for the 2005-2006 academic year.

Trainees receive a stipend (expected to be $27,500 in the coming academic year) in addition to $10,500 to cover tuition, fees, books, insurance, travel, and research-related expenses. Trainees follow a training program that includes interdisciplinary training and courses, workshops, seminars, and a summer internship. Trainees may be enrolled in any graduate program at the University of Texas, but should be pursuing a doctoral degree.

Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents and must submit the following materials to the IGERT Fellowship Committee, Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, ACES 3.422, Mail Code C4500, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas 78712:

  • Biographical Sketch including (as appropriate): name, address, phone number, academic history, work history, awards and honors, papers presented, publications, and any other information helpful for understanding the individual's strengths and qualifications for the IGERT program.
  • Transcripts of previous academic work (unofficial copies are acceptable).
  • GRE scores.
  • Statement of research interests and goals (1-2 pages double-spaced).
  • One to two letter(s) of recommendation from your major advisor(s). These letters need not be extensive, but must comment directly on how the applicant's research interests are related to the IGERT theme. In addition (and most importantly), the letters should state the willingness of the faculty advisor to participate in the IGERT program (including activities such as advising students, participating in interdisciplinary courses, and participating in IGERT workshops, seminars, and retreats). The letter(s) should indicate if arrangements have already been made to co-advise the applicant by both computational and biological faculty. Such arrangements need not be made prior to application, but will be required of all successful applicants.

Applications should be received by 5:00 PM Monday 28 February 2005 to receive priority consideration, although applications will be considered after that date if spaces are still available in the program.
